16th AUGUST 2019

President’s Comments

First up I would like to say a big thank you to Kevin McKenzie and the rest of the Rotary team that stepped in for me for most of the month of July. Going on holiday was a great way to start my Rotary year as president.

We had our first Board meeting for the 2019/2020 Rotary year on Tuesday night and one of the discussions was about the format, distribution and content of our Bulletin. The Board agreed a fortnightly Bulletin should continue, as it provides notice and information to our members that you might not otherwise know about.
So, what is happening in Alexandra Rotary?
Dunstan Hospital Outdoor furniture maintenance – Stu and his team of helpers have this well in hand.
Community House Grounds Maintenance Contract – a tender for this work has been filed by Jim and we are waiting to hear if it has been accepted.
Cystic Fibrosis Appeal – Claire is organising this and Rotarians will be at work outside the Alexandra New World on Friday 16th August 2019
River Trail Clean Up and Probation Supervision – The team led by Jim, John and Nev are making good progress on the track and we expect to continue the probation supervision for at least another 6-week stint.
Poplar Grove Park – This is a project being undertaken in conjunction with the CODC led by Ren, with Nev and Ritchie Stephens giving significant time to the project; quickly progressing the works by bringing in the big machinery. Further landscaping and beautification works are still to be undertaken and Rotary has received $4,000 in donations from adjoining property owners that the Board has tagged for the project. I expect there will be some more hands-on work for us to do on this project in the near future.
Trees for Babies – Karin has this project in hand and is looking for 14 families that may want to have a tree planted in celebration of their child or grandchild’s birth this year.
Polio Movie Night - 24 September 2019 – “Ride Like A Girl” – Jillian and Claire will be looking for members support to attend the Polio movie fundraising event on 24 September 2019. Public are also welcome, so bring along your friends. All proceeds go to End Polio Now.
Loud Shirt Day - Get your louds shirts ready for a meeting night in September. More information to come from Charles soon (and see below).
Christmas Function – Venue booked for Tuesday 10 December 2019 – more information to come from Hugh closer to the date.
Salvation Army Wood Chopping – Steve and the crew continue this project (with no injuries)
Manuherikia Whanui Meeting - 6 September 2019 – Kevin will be attending this community support services and network meeting on behalf of Alexandra Rotary.
Let me know if I have missed anything. You are all doing amazing work!
Justine

Alexandra Musical Society Production of Joseph

Hugh has managed to negotiate a special ticket price for the opening night of this year’s production. Normal price $45.00, special price available to us is $30 adult and $15 for children. This is for Saturday night only. If Saturday night doesn’t suit, these prices are also available on the Monday night to Joe Public. For your information “Gold Card” Holders have a set price of $39.00 any night

These are preferential bookings so Hugh needs to confirm them by Friday 23rd August. So, if you would like to attend the opening night at the special price negotiated, let Hugh know as soon as possible and he will organise the seats and tickets which will be payable when they are delivered to you. Ring Hugh on 4486613 or email hughmcintyre20@gmail.com or let him know on Tuesday next.

Comments from Charles on ‘Loud Shirt Day’ 2019

The club Directors have decided that the club will again take part in Loud Shirt Day as we did last year.

Loud Shirt Day is an annual fundraiser dedicated to enabling children who are deaf, and have cochlear implants and hearing aids, to listen and speak through funding of free audiology and therapy services.

This year Loud Shirt Day is to be held on Friday the 27th of September, although a suitable date for the Club is yet to be arranged. Charles will have details.

Millennium Trail Clean Up continues until the 14th of September

A reminder regarding the Cystic Fibrosis Appeal

There is a National Cystic Fibrosis Appeal on 16/17 August. We will support it by manning a Collection point at Alex New World on Friday 16 August.
Claire is co-ordinating this for the club.

Rarotonga Literacy Project

This is a joint project, currently in the early planning stages, between Wanaka, Cromwell and Alexandra Clubs in Central Otago, and Rarotanga Rotary. President Justine has been keen to join with other local clubs in such a venture
The desired outcome is twofold – to supply 2nd hand books to stock Lilliput Libraries – old double door commercial display fridges, and to provide appropriate educational books to Apii Nikao School. This club will commit $2,000.00 to this project; a District Grant Application will be applied for, with an overall budget spend of $11,000.00. The club will be looking for someone to drive our part of the project.

Alexandra Community House - watch this space

An expression of interest document for the grounds maintenance of Alexandra Community House has been submitted to their Manager.
This is a 2 year contract to maintain the lawns, gardens, pathways and carpark in a tidy presentable condition.
This is a revenue earning project that will require full support from club members should we be successful. Time input will vary from a weekly visit in spring/summer to monthly over the winter.
