ALEXANDRA ROTARY BULLETIN 28th August 2020
President Kevin's comments

What a difference a day makes – the words of this song ring so true for us over the past 2 weeks. When we met on Aug 11, we were in level 1 but by the time we got home the announcement had been made we were going to level 2 the next day. The “new normal” for us all has kicked in and we are now used to zapping the Q Code on our phones or signing in to places as a normal part of life. Let’s hope we can kick this bug quickly and get back to a real normal.
Last Tuesday we adapted our seating structure to comply with level 2 and this will continue at least until level 1 commences.

Our last 2 speakers have been most interesting. Barry Eunson gave us an informative, and mostly lighthearted, insight into the work of a paramedic. I’m sure we will all be interested in which acronym the paramedics use if we, or someone we know, need assistance from them.
Tim Cadogan updated us on his three main issues – COVID, the fruit season and water. We were given a perspective on these issues and members were able to question Tim on other issues important to them. It’s always good to have the mayor’s perspective and to have the chance for members to put theirs.

Bob Dawson – past member – has been approved for membership by Directors. This is formal notification with the usual conditions. All going well Bob will be inducted again next meeting.

Director's meeting 25th August:

Directors have approved funding support for 2 organisations. The Light Party has been granted $650 for the hire of a bouncy castle and we have committed to supply member labour on the day – Oct 31. The Life Education Trust was granted $500 to assist with their work in local schools.

Future events:

We have our 3 main fundraisers coming up – quiz, charity dinner and book sale. Consideration is being given as to how we would run these if the levels were other than level 1. We are committed to these events so need to be prepared for eventualities.

Our Rotary theme for the year “Rotary Opens Opportunities” is at the heart of what we do. Thank you to all who have contributed to our projects and meetings. Our Club is very much alive and progressing.

Please note: Attendance at recent meetings has been great but Directors have some concern about “SILENT” members. There is a financial burden on the club for silent members so Directors have agreed silent members will be charged for their meal in future. We realise last minute issues and illness arise and can accommodate these with an apology (even at the last minute).

A reminder:
Our formal Rotary meetings are now being held at the Bridge Club in Boundary Road on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. Duties will be allocated by Gil for these meetings and published in the monthly newsletter/Bulletin.

The dates up until Christmas are:

Sept 8 and 22
Oct 13 and 27
Nov 10 and 24

Dec 8 will be our AGM

Directors will meet at the Bridge Club after Rotary on the 4th Tuesdays of each month.

To ensure our caterer can organise the food properly we need apologies in to Greg Hunter by midday on the Monday prior to the meeting.

The other Tuesdays will be a mixture of events and will be notified to all members as planned.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

I have emailed direct to those who were involved last year with an invite to participate. If anyone else in the club would like to get involved please let me know by next Tuesday (1 September) so I can incorporate you into the roster.

It works like this.
Participants are split into groups of 3 couples by myself. One couple gets allocated to host. The day before the event (it has been known to be later!) the “guests” are advised of the “Hosts” address and the time they are expected. After that it is all up to you. No one knows who is attending each venue, apart from me.

You should expect to host once out of 3 cycles, and we do not expect “new participants” to host first time up. We like to know if people have special dietary requirements so the host can be advised, so make sure you tell me when you register.

Look forward to hearing from you, the more the merrier.

Away Night 1st of September

I have arranged a booking for 6.15 for 35 Rotarians at Ashoka Indian Restaurant. I will need final numbers on the Monday night. I will liaise with Greg after the weekend so please, if you have an apology to put in, please get in by Sunday night if possible.

The meal will cost $20.00 and you will be able to pay by card at the restaurant if you prefer. This does tend to slow the process up so if you can find a $20 note bring it with you.

The smells I detected when in there making the booking were delicious, so much so that I think I may go and test the menu.

I am waiting to see what menu they are offering and will make sure there is nothing too hot being served!

I will be in touch by email to check on numbers.

A Reminder regarding roster duties:

Alexandra Rotary Duty Roster for Formal Tuesday meetings at the Bridge Club

This new roster does not include the ‘last word’ or the ‘raffle’, both of these duties have been deleted from the future duties roster at our club by the Directors.

Because we are using the Bridge Club rooms in Boundary Road as a meeting venue now, this venue requires a slightly different duty roster than in the past. This roster was first employed successfully at our meeting on the 23 of June 2020 and since.

The new roster including an explanation of how it operates follows here:

1.         Two persons on Cashier/ Attendance duty

2.         Three people on setup/bar/kitchen hand/clean-up - they would need to be there by 5.30pm and would finish last after cleaning up the last of the glasses/bottles – The bar duty includes setting up a drinks station and being there to clip members vouchers as they take a drink. Nev Grubb is arranging for the drinks to be delivered each week from Henry’s and he has also devised the voucher system.

3.         One person to Introduce Speaker/Thank Speaker

4.         One person on 3 Minute Talk

5.         One person as Sergeant

This roster differs slightly from that used on the 23rd of June, in that two club members will be on ‘cashier/attendance’ duties rather than just one from now on (there is often a bit of a rush to tick names off and collect the cash for the meal) and three club members will be rostered on ‘set up/bar/kitchen duties/tidy up after’ (three rather than just two members because there is quite a lot to do with this duty). That is eight members on duty each night (as before in fact).

Note: this duty roster is still only on trial at this stage. The reason why there are three lots of set up etc duties is because the club runner duty roster site allows only one person per category.

Charity dinner - reminder

The Charity Dinner is back on - COVID relapse permitting.

Saturday November 28th at Orchard Garden.

Hayden Paddon is the guest speaker, for those of you who aren’t aware of Hayden, he is New Zealand’s most successful rally car driver having competed on the World Rally Championship circuit driving for Hyundai, including a win in Argentina.  He is currently based in Cromwell.

His appeal won’t just be to motor heads, he is an international sportsman in one of the most demanding of sports and a very accomplished speaker.

The timing of the dinner whilst getting close to Christmas actually makes it appealing for a corporate Christmas evening - so start getting the word out to your contacts and have them book in this date.

A poster is being prepared to help promote the dinner and more details will follow once the organising committee get together again.

In the meantime, talk to your contacts, colleagues and friends to book a ticket, a table and some sponsorship.

Regards

John
