Our speaker for the first club night of the year was club member John Whitaker. John was originally a Southlander but later moved with his family to Central Otago where he attended Alexandra Primary School and Dunstan High. After working in the outdoor activities industry he eventually became the CEO of Farra Engineering of Dunedin and told us of his involvement in several large projects in New Zealand and abroad. John has now retired to Alexandra after a very interesting career and has transferred to our club from Mosgiel.
I was absent ill from last Tuesday’s meeting. Thank you once again Justine for taking over at short notice. Our guest speaker was atmospheric scientist Ben Liley. I’m sorry I missed his talk. Climate change, and preparing for it, is a major challenge for the whole world. We do seem to be experiencing more extreme weather. The US Midwest has been hard hit by a polar vortex bringing record low temperatures - down to -30C in Chicago. You may have seen President Trump tweeted “What the hell is going on with global waming. Please come back fast, we need you.” Hardly an erudite comment you might think and the spelling error is his own.
The directors have decided that the annual book sale next year will be from 1st -4th January 2020 After the success of this year’s book sale held over those dates this seems a logical decision.
Last Saturday the Tasmania bound Professional Development Exchange group from our district , including our club nominee Andrew Jopp, had a meeting to discuss arrangements for their trip in April. Many thanks to McIntyre Flannery Tait for making their premises available for this gathering.
Centennial Court have advised that their premises won’t be available for us on Tuesday 5th March. Our social committee is looking for an alternative venue, possibly at Roxburgh.
That’s all from me.
See you Tuesday
