President Justine’s Comments

We are often asked what Rotary is and what do Rotarians do. I overheard my 12-year-old son telling his friend after attending the meeting with us that it is a group of old people that have meetings and do stuff in the community. You will be pleased to know he thought the night wasn’t as boring as expected.
Rotary International describe Rotary as a global network of 1.2 million neighbours, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and act to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. Paul Harris perhaps better summed it up saying “whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves”.
We do a lot in our community that goes unrecognised and we are not great at promoting ourselves and Rotary. Perhaps it is time for us to rethink this before we are all too old.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Round 3

We have survived two rounds of this venture without any major calamities and no cases of Food Poisoning reported. Planning is now commencing for round 3 which will be held on either the Saturday 5th or Saturday 12th of October. I will be circulating those on my List mid-October but in the meantime I suggest you mark the calendar with those dates.

Those who have not given me their names are welcome to join the group. Let me know at our meeting or email me at hughmcintyre20@gmail.com and I will add you in. We have 18 members on our list at present. A few who haven’t been able to participate yet for various reasons, hopefully this time.

Away Night 24 September

As you should be aware this was proposed to be a movie night but had to be deferred to a later date. We are now booked at Stadium Tavern. A speaker yet to be confirmed but I am sure we will find one. Richard is not available as he is entertaining his fellow “Mad Scientists”.

Christmas Function

We are ahead of our game here. A booking has been made for Tuesday the 10th of December at the Cellar Door. Catering is going to be done by Bec from the Courthouse. Those of you who attended our Changeover Night will be able to attest to the quality of the Food. A Xmas themed menu will be served. Expected cost $45 (You can start saving now) With luck some entertainment will be organised

Jim Carroll – Service Projects convenor (community)

Below is a letter received from Maree Leitch at Dunstan Hospital, regarding the recent clean-up of outdoor furniture at the hospital.

Subject: Dunstan Hospital

Hi Jim
Can you please pass on to the people concerned a big thank you for bringing back to life our outdoor furniture, which was looking a bit sad!
Staff, patients and visitors now have a wide range of great looking furniture to sit on to admire the views of Central Otago now that the Spring has arrived.  We are really fortunate to have groups like yours who continue to offer their services free of charge to Dunstan Hospital – this community is certainly a great place to live.
Regards, Maree Leitch
Jim says a special thanks is due to Stu Beattie for organising this project.

TREES FOR BABIES

Planting the Trees for Babies is happening on Sunday 15 September at 2pm at Vallance Cottage, 2 Samson St (off Tarbert St).  We have 14 heritage apple trees (four varieties) to plant and at the moment only 8 babies.  I’m looking for your help in two ways: -
To locate a further 6 families that would like to take part – please talk to family, friends, workmates and neighbours and see if there are people out there who would like to participate.  The cost to the family is $25 per tree – the tree is subsidised by Rotary and planted with assistance from the CODC.
To assist families to plant their trees on the day.  Learning from last year, it’s better to have 1-2 helpers for each family.  The following people have offered to help (I apologise if I’ve missed anyone but please put your hand up again).

Comments from Charles on ‘Loud Shirt Day’

Please note again

The club Directors have decided that the club will again take part in Loud Shirt Day as we did last year.

Loud Shirt Day is an annual fundraiser dedicated to enabling children who are deaf, and have cochlear implants and hearing aids, to listen and speak through funding of free audiology and therapy services.

This year Loud Shirt Day is to be held on Friday the 27th of September, although a suitable date for the Club is yet to be arranged. Charles will have details.
