Our club meeting on the 28th May was at a rather hastily arranged different venue. It was before my time with the club, but in the recent past the club did have the Stadium Tavern as its main meeting place and we were back there again. As far as I was concerned it worked well and we had a good night. Our ”guest” speaker was club member and former president Carolyn Martin who told us about her work as leader of a Primary Health Organisation (PHO), supported by the DHB, and which provides various services to quite a number of medical practices and other health professionals. She also outlined the help available via Patient Portals which can be used for prescription repeats, making appointments, reviewing test results and the like. A useful and time -saving service for those availing themselves of it.
The following Tuesday we were entertained by Roxburgh resident Russell Wards who was another interesting visitor. Russell told us of his time when employed in a senior position in the Saudi dairy industry. Work practices in that country seem to be somewhat different to what we are used to in New Zealand! Stock has to be kept cool with water spray, food for animals is mostly imported and water is supplied from aquifers. New Zealand farmers generally don’t have to cope with persistent dust storms! Russell, now an orchardist, came through from Roxburgh with Alex Gordon, a club member based in that town. That same evening we heard all about Hugh McIntyre’s new puppy. It seems to have as much gear as a baby, including a play pen, heated blanket, car seat etc. The expression it’s a dog’s life obviously has taken on new meaning in the McIntyre household.
Friday this week there was a working bee on our native plantings along Centennial Avenue and Boundary Road, thanks to Kevin, Jim C and Jim P, Bernie HB and Andrew, stay tuned for a date to apply some mulch
June 28th it’s Change Over night when Justine takes over the Club Presidency for a year. More details to follow.
RYLA participants planting opposite Molynuex Estate. This is the area that was maintained on Friday afternoon.

Across the Clutha River at Alexandra are impressive masonry piers, towers, and abutments – the remnants of Alexandra Bridge. This important landmark was constructed between 1879 and 1882, and the former suspension bridge components have withstood the force of the South Island’s longest river for well over a century.
