PRESIDENT'S COMMENTS
Listening to Brian Budd tell us about himself and his passions and life as a banker, motor enthusiast and accomplished musician reminded me of how many of our Club members have amazing stories to tell. Everyone has a back story and we are not defined by one occupation that we have. You may or may not know that Brian is also our first member to have a name badge with his name only on it and not his occupation.

Yes, this is another change to our Club formalities. And that is because we respect members for who they are and what they want to give to our club and community not their occupation. Good, kind and honest people come from all walks of life and some back stories may start off a bit rough and not everyone gets to the top of their profession but that should not exclude them from Rotary.

It used to be that only one person of an occupation could be a member. In later years we have fudged that by giving our teachers, lawyers, accountants, farmers etc, a variety of occupation definitions to get past the one professional rule. Now it is time to recognise that your occupation is not what defines you or our members and a name badge is just a name badge.

REPORT FROM PETS (President Elect training)

I attended President Elect training in Dunedin last weekend, an event that I thoroughly enjoyed both socially and from a Rotary perspective. Our incoming DG - Dylan Murray from Waimate, has firmly put membership at the top of his list. All clubs need to be able to attract and retain members in order to grow. This is a District and world wide problem (apart from India).

Making Rotary work better for members is number one. To do this, clubs have been looking at ways trying to address issues to help with this. We discussed this as a club nearly two years ago,

The key is to engage members, and to do this all clubs present at our training seminar are looking to:-

  • Meet less often
  • Do more
  • Reduce costs
  • Ensure new members are well mentored
  • Lose some of the rituals
  • Have fun
  • Have a flexible meeting platform
The Rotary motto 'Service Above Self' is our key
