ALEXANDRA ROTARY BULLETIN 25th June 2021
President Kevin's Comments

The last few days have given us all a wakeup call with the changing COVID levels in the Wellington area. It has shown us just how easily the virus can spread and how normal activities can make many vulnerable. Down here we may think we are isolated enough to be safe but we are a very mobile society and no area is immune. Keep scanning, keep vigilant.

Our speaker this week was Pam Hughes JP, who is the budget advisor for this area. Pam’s talk was very interesting and informative and the huge number of clients they deal with was impressive. There are obviously many people in our society who are going through difficult times right now.

The past 12 months have gone quickly (possibly something to do with age!!) and our Rotary year is at an end. We have had a year of changes – venue, meeting frequency and caterer. Our transition to the Bridge Club venue has been well received. It is the best Rotary venue I have had in my 36 years in Rotary. We have a comfortable, warm venue and we have it to ourselves. Our caterer Jean Bonsor has done a magnificent job of supplying meals to a group with diverse needs and expectations. I have only had very positive comments and I thank Jean for the work she has done to keep the inner man (and woman) well satisfied.

My sincere thanks go to all club members. This club has a get up and do attitude and the many projects and fundraisers we have taken part in have helped to bond the club and at the same time benefit many in our community through monetary and physical help.

A big thank you to the Directors who have diligently co-ordinated and directed activities and projects, some small some quite large. Your conscientious leadership is much appreciated. The funds we have raised through these projects are used to support a wide range of local and international individuals and organisations.

At this week’s Directors meeting we approved funding for;
  • Three Dunstan High students to attend the model United Nations Assembly in Wellington in July - $1500
  • Central Otago Budget Service to purchase a new laptop computer - $1200
  • Alexandra Toy Library to upgrade technology equipment - $1200
  • Lend a Hand $3000

This is my last newsletter as President. It is time to hand the reins of the club to Jim Carroll. I wish Jim all the best for the coming year and I know the whole club will support Jim in his Presidency.

Another good night of fellowship and frivolity on Friday night our Rotary Change Over night. Thanks for the great turnout.

Reminder of events coming up:

Budding Curlers.
I will try for booking a rink for Tuesday the 6th of July
Will need 8 players for two teams, first in first served males or females we are a nonsexist organisation!

We can get another rink if there is enough interest.
Probably just for an hour maybe hour & a half at 5pm. We could retire to the Stadium afterwards for a drink and food if you want

Contact me by phone or email to let me know if you are interested.

Another July outing will be at Dunstan House, Clyde on Tuesday 20 July. A chance for the Clyde boys and girls to really let their hair down (those that still have some) and walk home afterwards.
Cost $20
I will get numbers on the 13th which is our next meeting date

I am looking at Yummy Asian on 17 August. Yet to be booked in, waiting to see if we get to go to Australia or not! Bring on the vaccinations please. It will happen, possibly under different management!

The other news, although not my department, is the Quiz Night proposed for 7 September, this is yet to be confirmed.
