BULLETIN 30th July 2021
President Jim's Comments

Last month’s Bulletin featured President Kevin’s last column; this month features my first – a changing of the guard - though not as elaborate as what goes on at the India/Pakistan border. (I don’t think any of us could raise our legs as high as they do anymore).

I enjoy the clubs change to fortnightly meetings; however, it does sometimes mean that time moves on quickly, and it is hard to believe that it is already a month since changeover.

For those of you who were at Tuesday’s meeting, I handed out a “Member Survey” questionnaire. My intention is to give everyone the opportunity to make comment on various aspects of the club and its operation – what you like, don’t like, what we could do better, what would make it more interesting for you. The intention is to collate and summarise everyone’s response, and then devote a meeting to developing some outcomes for the way forward.

I ask everyone to please participate – your thoughts matter, so have your say. Obviously, the sooner this can be worked through the better. I will email a copy out to everyone who was not present on Tuesday.

There will be a collection box at the door at the next meeting, or you can scan it back to me or Secretary Greg – but it would be great to have everyone’s response on or before our next meeting. If you are concerned about anonymity, then you will just have to come to the next meeting!

Congratulations to John Whitaker and his good mates Hilarie and Gordon Wilson, who have secured Peter Williams (photo below) for the Guest Speaker slot at the upcoming Charity Dinner. Peter is of course the now retired TV presenter and Sports anchorman. He does have a slot however on Magic Radio as a talk back host. One can only imagine he has a wealth of stories to tell. Now the club has to knuckle down again, as usual, and support John in setting up another successful Dinner/Auction.

A reminder to everyone that the Quiz Night will fire up again this year after a Covid19 pause in 20/21.
Nev Grubb reminded us all that it is set for Tuesday September 7. Calls for assistance to follow.

This 21/22 Rotary year is being celebrated for 100 years of Rotary in New Zealand. It is an opportune time for the club to come up with a project that marks this occasion, as well as exemplifying Rotary’s theme for this year of “Serve to Change Lives”. There have already been a couple of suggestions put forward.

At Tuesdays Board meeting the Board approved
  • A Grant of $1500.00 to Millers Flat School to help fund their Year 7 & 8 students on a trip to Wellington
  • A reduction in member’s annual subscription from $230 to $200.
Two District Grant Applications have been sent through to District
  • $1790 to subsidise “Dictionaries in Schools” and “Rhyming around the Alphabet”
  • $2000 to assist with work at Poplar Grove.
My next column will be almost into Spring!

I think all those who came out to Clyde were impressed with the meal we got at Dunstan House for our $20. I thought they did very well and certainly exceeded my expectations. My only concern was that there was only one meatball left when I turned up at the table (tail end Charlie as usual) A certain gentleman from Galloway was seen to be distributing excess supplies from his plate to others who had been at the end of the queue. No names but we know where you live.

I had planned to be in Broadbeach Queensland about now so I haven’t organised the next night out but likely to be Yummy Asian or one of the Indian Restaurants we have been to. Will just coordinate the meeting dates and check availability of the Restaurants along with my own amended holiday plans and provide a date in the next week with luck.

I have in mind a car trial of sorts in the spring, just need to talk to Bill and Brian as to the logistics for a Tuesday night or if we need to do it at a weekend. Watch this space.

If anyone would like to become my deputy/assistant this year let me know. It would probably be a good idea to have a change next year and some exposure to the process wouldn’t do any harm.
