President Gordon’s Comments

 Regionalisation

This will be a one off and my final comment on the subject so bear with me. We had an interesting Zoom meeting with Bruce Cowan, Tuesday night. There’s obviously a lot yet to be done before there is a full plan of how it is going to work - a long and lengthy process.

The pilot project won’t change much in our usual club activities and business but it would seem that there can only be good to come from it for Rotary in general with more involvement of zone areas in the governance, meeting the needs of the clubs and ultimately its members. For example, having regional areas and not having such large geographical districts based on numbers,

It is all the South Pacific, Zone 8 and United Kingdom, Zone that are the pilots of this change. Yes, we will have a club vote on Tuesday 6 September and I will ensure our decision is caste. No way will we have a NO vote by default. There is a lot more information available on the web page http/creatingtomorrowrotary.org

D G - Jan Boustead’s visit

NB. September 6th is our next meeting night.

We are hosting our Governor Jan and her husband David. The Bousteads come from the Lincoln Club. Jan has the whole of the South Island to cover in District 9999 so let’s make them very welcome and ensure they have an enjoyable visit.

Board meeting report.

Items of Interest: -

Concern for good communication between our agencies i.e. Lend a Hand, Vince Ashworth Trust and Rotary Trust. Often applications for assistance can go to all three entities. I say good luck to the applicants but it can also be seen to be a duplication. The application forms do have a question asking whether the applicant has applied to other organisations.

Directors agreed to support Days for Girls (DFG) project to the tune of $1000

Jillian is assisting Karin with the Trees for Babies project. Thank you Jillian. More participants are required.

I hope to acquire sunflower seeds to grow as a contest to raise funds for Ukraine. Sunflowers are Ukraine’s national flower. There is an article about this in the August issue of Rotary Downunder

Applications are invited for RYLA programme. Contact Arnold for more information.

We had a request from Vanessa Gallagher for financial support to attend Outward Bound.
$1000 was given. These courses offer a great opportunity to our young people. We’ve received a great letter from Phoebe Wellstead who we supported previously.

NB again - meeting night changes for SEPTEMBER ONLY.

Social

We are somewhat overdue for a social occasion, and I apologise for the length of time since the last one. Weather, holidays and might as well say Covid as well, everyone else does, are the cause!!

I have booked Ferris Road Brewery for a Pint, Pinot and Pizza night for Tuesday the 11th of October and we will make this a partners night as well. September is busy with two meetings, Quiz night (13th September, Alexandra District Club, 7pm) and many helping at the Blossom Festival, so I have left it until October. Watch this space for details and write it in your diary.

Vince Ashworth Trust

Rob has provided a draft copy of the Financial Statements to 30 June. The highlights are:-

The Capital of the Trust stands at $174,318 with additional undistributed income amounting to $31,224 giving total funds of $205,542.
Income for the year has been $4,200 and grants paid out total $3,957. Expenses of $51 have been incurred.
Ten Grants have been made, the average grant being $395. A range of educational activities have been funded to assist students to be involved in activities that they would otherwise not have been able to experience.

Remember this night at the Ferris Road Brewery - or perhaps you can't!
Charity dinner takings in the past - let's see if we can be even better this year with good charities in mind.

Rotary Charity Dinner

The Rotary Charity Dinner and Auction is on again - this year Saturday the 19th of November at the popular Orchard Garden. (This is likely to be the last hurrah of the Orchard Garden as we know it as Dale and Wendy have sold the property). See graph of past takings above.

This year’s speaker is Matt Chisholm, well known television reporter and celebrity host, author and now Central Otago farmer. Matt will talk on his life as detailed in his autobiography, ‘Imposter’. It will be an entertaining and emotional talk as he shares his own life’s highs and lows.

We are privileged to have someone of Matt’s caliber to talk to us.

Given the timing of the event we hope that the evening appeals again as a Christmas function.

The format is dinner and drinks, the guest speaker and then the charity auction with a silent auction running in the background.

The funds raised will go the Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust, they provide a magnificent service to the community of Central Otago. (Last year the funds raised went to the longer-term replacement of the Central Otago Health Shuttle).
