Preident Justine's Comments

With World Polio Day on 24 October 2019, our Club is providing support for PolioPlus with our movie night on 18 October 2019.  PolioPlus is the most ambitious programme in Rotary's history, as the volunteer arm of the global partnership dedicated to eradicating polio. For more than 30 years Rotary has led the private sector in the global effort to rid the world of this crippling disease.

World Polio Day was initiated by Rotary International over a decade ago to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who developed a vaccine against poliomyelitis. As well as the movie night we have two containers being filled with your spare change each week that we will present at District Conference next year. Please support our movie night and get online and book to attend.

Don’t forget, we are at Monteith’s next Tuesday night for our Club meeting.

Regards

Justine

Please let Greg know about attendance by Monday night where possible. Unfortunately, Hugh has to go to a funeral on Tuesday afternoon so will not be able to be there but will organise what he can before he goes.

STROKE FOUNDATION BLOOD PRESSURE DAY 5th OCTOBER

This campaign went well thanks to Charles and those who helped on the day; Robyn, Graham, Gordon, Russell, Denis and to some extent Gil.

The number of participants this year (157) was down a little on previous years possibly due to the average weather on the day. By comparison, in 2015, 242. In 2016, 246. In 2017, 185 and in 2018, 175. Those participants with high and low blood pressure readings were referred by St John staff to their GP. The higher of the two readings (systolic) is when the heart is pumping and the lower of the two readings (diastolic) is when the heart is momentarily at rest. Blood pressure tends to rise with age. A normal healthy young adult blood pressure should be around 120/80. A blood pressure of 139/90 would be a normal high for others, but anything higher than that would need a GP visit.

The highest reading on the day was recorded as: 189/104 (age group 36-49) and another 169/111 (age group 50-65). The lowest: 90/60 (age group less than 20 [a child in fact]).

Measuring the blood pressure of community members is a public health measure and a worthwhile event for Rotary clubs around New Zealand to be involved with.

A reminder

We are having an advanced screening of 'Ride Like a Girl' with screenings at 5.30pm and 7.30pm on Friday 18th October at Central Cinema in Alexandra.  Tickets are $25 which includes a complimentary glass of wine.  If there is not enough room in the bulletin for the flyer, members would be able to link straight in to the sight and book accordingly if you put the www reference below.

We are using the online booking system
www.trybooking.co.nz/CTA  for this night.  We will bring a laptop to our meetings over the next few weeks to help those who are not great with online bookings and help them book if they wish. All they would need is a credit card!

Briefly...
'Ride Like a Girl' is based on the inspirational true story of New Zealander, Micelle Payne becoming the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup and her struggles on her way to acceptance in the male-dominated world of Australian racing. The main actors are Teresa Palmer and Sam Neill.
The next Bulletin will be published on Friday the 25th of October.
