Charles’ Chat
We have a new bulletin editor! After some years on this task Liz has decided it’s time for a rest. Thanks Liz for the effort you have put in to producing the bulletin especially during your recent travels when at times you were working in airport lounges and other transit venues.
Gil has taken over as editor and will revert to the Club Runner format. Jillian will help out as required. Andrew has been helping with training. I still need a bit! Thanks to you all for taking on this work for the club.
Meetings
Our guest speaker on the 9th October was Alex Lake. Alex had recently attended an International Air Cadet programme in the US with other New Zealanders. Rotary had helped with some of the funding required. He obviously found the trip well worthwhile visiting Washington DC., and other locations including the Yellowstone National Park. He even managed to log up some hours towards his solo pilot’s license.
Last Tuesday we gathered in good numbers at the Ferris Road Brewery where quite a few pizzas were consumed along with one or two pints. Sam, the owner of this business, told us something of his background, how he got started as a brewer and how he had moved on and set up his current business in Ngapara Street. It was a really good night. Good to see partners and guests there as well.
Other events/news
The Alexandra/Clyde & District Business Group Inc have invited a delegation from the club to a breakfast meeting on the 26th October at the Cellar Door. A number of people and organisations will be attending as part of an effort to mobilise support for the further development of the Alexandra Ice in Line ice skating and Curling complex. I’m arranging for a party from the club to attend. We definitely should help in some way.
On 27th October the Combined Churches Children’s Light party is being held. Andrew has arranged for a number of us to be in attendance. Please wear Rotary branded apparel if you have it available. It doesn’t do any harm to show the flag!
An event that I would like to see well supported by the club is the Rotary movie night on the 2nd November. This is a fund raiser for the worldwide polio eradication programme which has been so successful over the years. Jillian is taking bookings for Bohemian Rhapsody which by all accounts is lively entertainment.
9th November is the date for the unveiling of the Armistice Day memorial. Jim Carroll has put a lot of effort into seeing this project through to completion. Thanks for that Jim!
The next day, Saturday 10th November is the District wide “Fun Day. A barbeque lunch at Cromwell will be followed by the chance to drive around the Highlands race track. Grant Constable has the details.
The annual club quiz night is not far away (13th November) and Kevin MacKenzie is looking for prizes to be donated for the night. This is event has always been well supported by the club and is one of our major fund raisers.
Next Meeting
Our guest speaker at Centennial Court on 23rd October is George Booth from the Rotary club of Fremantle who will talk about recent developments at that club. It should be helpful for our ongoing review of club activities and procedure.
There will also be a directors’ meeting that evening.
